The 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is ideal for trekkers who want more time for acclimatization and a quieter experience on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The route begins on the western side of the mountain and joins the Northern Circuit, allowing you to experience Kilimanjaro from several different perspectives before approaching the summit from the east.
Highlights
- Lemosho forest
- Shira Plateau
- Lava Tower
- Northern slopes
- Moir Camp
- Pofu Camp
- Third Cave
- Kibo
- Uhuru Peak
- Spectacular sunrise
Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure at Lemosho Gate after registration and a short briefing. Trek through the lush montane rainforest, surrounded by ancient trees and rich vegetation, before reaching Big Tree Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. The landscape opens up with impressive views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding valleys. Continue toward Shira 1 Camp for an overnight stay.
Cross the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic areas. The trek gradually gains altitude as you pass volcanic landscapes and enjoy views toward Kibo Peak. Continue to Moir Camp, an important acclimatization point.
Continue along the quieter northern side of Kilimanjaro. Today's trek takes you through remote alpine landscapes with magnificent views across the northern slopes. Pofu Camp provides a peaceful setting to rest and prepare for the next stage.
Trek further around the northern circuit toward Third Cave. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and alpine as you approach the higher elevations of Kilimanjaro. Enjoy a steady pace and allow your body to continue adapting to the altitude.
Leave Third Cave and make your way toward Kibo Hut, located beneath the summit. The vegetation becomes sparse as you enter the high alpine desert. After reaching Kibo, rest, eat an early dinner and prepare for the summit attempt.
Begin the summit ascent during the night, trekking slowly toward Gilman's Point and onward along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement before beginning the descent toward School Hut for rest.
After recovering from the summit, continue descending through the changing vegetation zones. The trail becomes greener as you approach the upper rainforest, eventually reaching Millennium Camp where you can relax and enjoy your final night on the mountain.
Complete your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out of the national park, receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi. Enjoy a well-earned shower and celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro adventure.
