Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is one of the most accessible safari destinations from Dar es Salaam, making it an excellent choice for travellers with limited time. Its open Mkata Floodplain provides good opportunities to see elephants, lions, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffes and hippos. The park also offers excellent birdwatching and can be combined with Udzungwa, Nyerere or longer Southern Circuit itineraries.
Best for: Short safaris, budget travellers, families, first-time safari visitors and travellers arriving in Dar es Salaam.

Nyerere National Park

One of Tanzania’s great wilderness destinations, Nyerere National Park combines vast miombo woodlands, open floodplains and the waterways of the Rufiji River. It is particularly special because visitors can experience both traditional game drives and boat safaris, with opportunities to see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, lions and a wide variety of birds. Nyerere is also an important destination for spotting African wild dogs.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha offers a more remote and wild safari experience, with huge landscapes, baobab-studded scenery and the Great Ruaha River at its heart. The park is known for large populations of elephants, buffalo, lions and other predators, while its diverse birdlife makes it attractive to birdwatchers. Walking safaris provide another way to experience the wilderness beyond traditional game drives.
