Known as the Coca-Cola Route, Marangu is the only main Kilimanjaro route where trekkers sleep in permanent mountain huts.
The 5-day itinerary is shorter and more demanding from an acclimatization perspective, making it better suited to experienced hikers or travelers with limited time.
Highlights
- Mandara Forest
- Marangu Gate
- Mandara Hut
- Horombo
- Kibo
- Uhuru Peak
- Mountain sunrise
Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut
After registration at Marangu Gate, begin your trek through the beautiful rainforest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation and birdlife as you gradually gain altitude toward Mandara Hut. Enjoy dinner and rest in the mountain huts.
Continue through the forest before entering the open moorland zone. As the vegetation becomes shorter, you'll begin to see impressive views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Trek at a steady pace toward Horombo Hut, your overnight base.
Today's trek takes you across the high-altitude moorland toward the Saddle, the area between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rocky as you approach Kibo Hut. After dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Begin your summit climb in the early hours of the morning. Trek slowly toward Gilman's Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement before descending to Kibo Hut and continuing to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain before descending through the moorland and rainforest toward Marangu Gate. Complete the park registration and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi for rest and celebration.
